"Be seeing you." -- Death

The Core Wed Apr 30 18:35:47 CDT 2003
Mood: Picky Music of the Day: Nothing
well, I went to see the The Core today. First of all, I'd like to say I did enjoy the movie. Even though I kept poking holes in its logic. Large gaping holes. Huge screaming holes of doom. But, besides that, it's not bad. A non science geek would miss a # of these...But still...they're bad.

Things wrong with The Core

1. Pacemaker fails, you don't just drop dead. Heart attack, maybe. Instant death...nope.
2. Large nuclear device explodes, gets the core spinning. "Like ripples in a pond." Yep, the core will move in the direction of the spin. And away from it. And towards the surface and so on....3 dimensions folks.
3. Birds loose their electromagnetic direction sense. Ok, bad thing. Dude, birds have eyes...they do stop for objects in their way.
4. Drillship is made like a train, with compartments that can be ejected in case of damage, cool. But what if the middle one is damaged ? Of course that could just be a design flaw...military contractors are done by the lowest bidder.
5. Lots of lightning will not make monuments explode...unless something in them combusts. At very best, it may slag the metal and/or rock. But if you hit a statue with a lightning bolt, it doesn't explode.
6. Whales do sing along with subsonics, but not at 1800 feet under the ocean. Well, sperm whales maybe, but not the humpbacks (I think) in the movie...
7. Real hackers don't need hot pockets. Raman noodles and caffinited beverages are enough ;)
8. There is a material dense enough and with enough tensile strength to withstand the force of the earth's mantle, and converts heat to energy and the designer of this nifty bit of stuff forgets #2 til he's long gone and the rugged hero scientist remembers. Ok, I'm forgetful...but sheesh...I think direct heat to energy conversion would catch my notice. And then, once it is remembered,....all it takes are some spot welds to make the ship work.
9. If you want to make a nuclear bomb bigger, putting a few fuel rods from the ship's reactor next to it just won't cut the mustard.
10. And finally...no nude scene. ;)

So...if you can take science goofs the size of Mt Rushmore in stride, this is the movie for you ;) Otherwise, run. Run fast. Run far.

Eris Goes to Hollywood Wed Apr 30 11:04:48 CDT 2003

Our Lady of Chaos is going to the movies. She is appearing in the forthcoming movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0165982)

She is voiced by Michelle Pfeiffer. From what I've seen of the trailer, Eris is the bad girl who steals the Book of Peace and frames Sinbad for it. Not the most flattering description of Discordia...but that's Hollywood for you.

It's schedueled to be out July 2nd, hmm...I wonder if we'll have Eris action figures this summer ;)

Well, thanks to the magick of Unisom, I've been getting full nights of sleep the last few days. It's a nice change...well other than I have no clue what to do with myself at 7am in the morning. What is it you people do when it's this flippin' early. It would be easier if I had a job, then I'd have the hussle and bussle of getting ready for work. Hmm, well there is exercise...*wince* well there is something to be said for sleeping in...don't have to deal with the dullness of the early AM *yawn*

Mood: Tired Music of the Day: Nightwish - Wishmaster
Well, I went with Hunter to a intro kung fu class at Shaolin-Do here in Austin. Oy. Let me say that again. Oy. Last martial arts workout I had was 7-8 years ago. And that was mostly me being thrown around. Last serious training I did was 15 years ago. As you may have guessed...I'm sore. Actually, I'm not sore yet...but I can feel the muscles in my thighs and stomach jumping...so I'll be sore tomorrow. And that was just the basic warmup workout, a few basic moves, and some combo i moves. And I learned something, while with the basic kicks I had issues with moving smoothly, in the combos I had little problem. Funny that, since that's the last thing I studied/practiced seriously. Then we watched the white/yellow belt class working out. Alot of the same stuff, plus quite a bit more. They work them white belts out ;) I'm seriously planning to continue, as soon as I can puzzle out paying for it. being unemployed sucks. But we'll see. Somehow I'll figure it out. :)

Mood: geeky Music of the Day: Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
I'm bored...been working on setting upApache 2 on Malaclypse. And it's being a PITA. The install runs fine, but I'm missing something in the configuration to get virtual domains. Due to a foggy brain I've given up for now, but I'll get it later. *grin*

I should be out mowing the lawn *bleah* but the mower won't turn over. Argh...I hate when mechanical things go wonky...of course, when I get it running...it's going to rain.

Came to the realization that looking mostly for a tech job is a fairly futile effort. So I went to Monster and set the search for every job in Austin. *thud* The ones that I like the most, just from the description are the scientific assistant style jobs. But I don't have the hard science credits from college for them... hmm...*ponders Austin Community College* But I did find a few techish jobs I applied at, including one working for Apple. Now that would be hysterical, me working on Imacs :) I need to get those apps I got last week finished and sent out. I think I'll get to work on that after another attempt at mowing the lawn. Ugg.

This last weekend Mon Apr 28 07:52:16 CDT 2003
Mood: Happy Music of the Day: Testament - Agony
Well, this last weekend me and Rhiannon went camping. Hurrah for Beltain campouts, got to spend the weekend with about 100 pagans down south of Austin. We drove down Friday morning. Made really good time, til we got to the town the campsite is in. Both of us have been here before, but it's been about 2 years. And so, we got lost trying to find it. County roads in this part of Texas are a little...well... fscked up. ;) So we had to backtrack into town, ask some directions, and finally make it. Set up camp next to a friend of ours, start socializing. Basically it was a very calm and easy weekend. Spent most of it sitting and talking. Got drafted into writing a limerick, which I will not post since it is fairly libelous. ;) Generally got to show off my sense of humor to much laughter. Even got a Bard of my aquaintance to almost do a full spit-take with a mouth of Guiness beer. I am so proud of myself. The only downside to the whole weekend was at night, at the bonfires, I was so zonked and groggy I wasn't having huge tons of fun. But I was having alot of general fun, especially watching a certain Vixen dancing :) :) :)

Oh, one very cool bit from this weekend. Some firetwirlers were at this campout. (Firetwirlers = people who play with fire) And one was this lovely young lady, who came up to me...and said "Chris ?" She was a very old friend of mine from college, who I haven't seen in nearly 10 years. Now I look very different from when she knew me, hair is much longer, I've got a beard...but she recognized me from the grin. So it was very nice to reconnect with one of my oldest friends. Now if she just gets a stable email address ;)

All in all it was a great weekend, I feel tons better than I did when we left. *happy dance*

Well, today has blown rather badly. I'm fighting off a sore throat from sinus drip. I dropped alot of money on groceries for camping, hell more for 3 days than for 2 weeks. Then I find out from Unemployment that my benefits may be suspended becaused I missed some meeting. My own dumb fault. *thud* Hopefully I'll be able to get a job at one of the retail places I'm applying at, so the unemployment becomes a moot point. Hmm, I wonder about doing some magick for a job at a pr0n store...just surreal enough that it may work.

Going camping this weekend...hope I cheer up some by then. Otherwise I'll really be a mess. :(

Umm...if you go see this, make sure you haven't been lacking in sleep for the past few weeks. Also note, playing 'spot the reference' is amusing, but gets you really weird looks from other moviegoers.

But, all in all, it's not a bad movie, if you like 70's-80's shock horror like the Hills have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And yes, Mr Zombie stole a ton from those two movies alone.

Vulpine gives it 3 grinning skulls.

(more lengthy review after I take sinus drugs and pass out for a while)

Gaim 0.61 Wed Apr 23 07:33:39 CDT 2003
Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Event Horizon - Track 2 - The Main Access Corridor
Well since i'm not sleeping, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Gaim 0.61. I've been happy with the 0.59 versions, but I wanted to start playing with GTK 2 so off a snagging I went. Downloaded the various .tar.gz's for the libs, downloaded gaim, installed. All well and good, if a little slow (note to self, must get new motherboard/processor soonish). Run gaim, eek loudly as it trying to get authorization from everyone in my icq directory....which boy is a lot. Clean all that up, and notice...no sounds. Check back, no audio...gaim for some reason couldn't find libao. Ok, reinstall that. Recompile...cool beans...except it's ugly. after much hacking and gnashing of teeth, figure out how to install gtk-2 themes without installing all of gnome 2. Just add a file called .gtkrc-2.0 with the following lines
    include "/usr/share/themes/AquaX/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
    style "default"
    {
    font_name = "Helvetica 9"
    }
    widget_class "*" style "default"
where the include path is the path to your gtk theme's gtkrc file. It's still a little weird, but I'm getting used to it. So, time to play with the new toys...wonder what I'll find

Going to a pagan meet and greet tomorrow night with La Jefecita, as well as we're talking about going to kung fu classes. Keep us out of trouble, and train to be the next Jet Li (or in her case, Michelle Yeoh).

Not alot else going on, watching Charmed episodes on mplayer. Hey what can I say, Rose McGowan is super-yummy ! Plus the show is fun. Campy, silly, and cheesy... but fun. :) Along with that, reading alot of LJ. I have some weird friends.

Job hunting, need to find a job soon. I'm boredboredbored. Lucky for me there are alot of bookstores and video places in the area. Plus the local pr0n shop is hiring. And boy do they pay good. Hmm, give up my life of geeking for a life of nudity and weird people...wait, my life is like that now. :) But I'd get paid for it. Woohoo :) Money is good. And it would make my resume look...intresting.

Hey all, quick post in my allergy induced haze. Run, don't walk, to your nearest movie theater and see Bulletproof Monk. It is hysterical and fun. Chow Yun-Fat (one of my favorite actors) shows his skill by playing a Monk with a rare talent. Humor. One of the best lines involves the words 'coco puffs', which as I recall...has never been mentioned in Hong Kong cinema before. Seann William Scott (aka Stiffler from American Pie) is good, and actually shows the ability to be more than a dumb kid actor. Plus Jamie King is yummy as the aptly named 'Bad Girl.' It's not a serious movie, the fight scenes are out of a comic book (funny that, since this is based on a comic). The bad guys are obviously bad, the good guys are obviously good. Simple, fun movie. Vulpine says, go see it.

    I am Shub-Niggurath!

Shub-Niggurath is often called the "Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young", and is the force of creation, life, evolution/mutation. She represent the force of the one universal constant (ie change) on the biological. She is often envisioned as a dark, low lying cloud, with goat's hooves with numerous tenticals writhing from within. Her rites are best performed during a New Moon, or on Mid-Summer's Eve.

Well, it's amazing what a little sleep, a little history reading and some general good feelings will do to help a mood. I ended up passing out around 8:30 or, after starting to reread The Head of God by Keith Laidler. Basically it's a historical theory linking Egyptian monothesism, Moses, Jesus, the Templars and a Cult of the Severed Head. Very intresting, the theory feels a little 'stretched' to me, but he shows a fairly clear pattern. If you're a history nut, or fond of religious history, it's a good read.

Other than that, I found out some good news... Opera7.10 and my bank play well. Thank gods. :) And for once in years, my account is balanced. *cheer* For me this is a major miracle...parting the Red Sea would be easy comparitively. ;) Special thanks to GNUCash for the software to help me balance my act. :)

Ok...not sure how I went from geeky to sad in the space of a few hours. I am very insomnac tonight...just can't seem to settle my mind down. Played diablo 2 for hours, made yet more progress. Then after dying repeatedly, decided to go back online and see if I could bore myself to sleep. Nope, so I went though a few blogs and livejournals, and ended up visiting the LJ of an exfriend/flirt buddy/gods knows what. Mental note, visiting the website of someone you had some feeling for is never a good idea when your down. *le sigh* I have no idea why I feel bad, we parted as friends because of a huge fight involving my relationship at the time, and her ego. It ended up costing me a few friends, and alot of sanity. So why dig up the past. I dunno...maybe I'm the masochist. Feh...

*turns on the mp3 player...ahh, Testament...music to go beat up people to.* Not that I would, too much of a pacifist. Funny, had an amusing discussion with Rhiannon about being a headbanger/moshpit junkie when I was a teenager/early twenties.
Rhiannon: So why did you guys headbang at metal shows ?
Vulpine: *vaguely clueless look* Err....umm....*blank look*
Anonymous Friend: Maybe it made the music better ?
Rhiannon: Or maybe because it was so bad the head have to go back and forth.
Vulpine: Nah, it was a warmup, so when you leaped into the mosh pit, you didn't break your spine in the first few minutes.
      Rhiannon: *boggle*
What's weird, I kinda miss being a full out metalhead. Going to concerts, slamdancing in the pit and venting my aggression in a fairly harmless way. Of course, this was in the "Golden Days" when moshing wasn't to go out and actively hurt people...that's one of the reasons I stopped, too many people wanting to go beserk and really hurt people. *shudder* A little too hardcore for me. I rather not have my teeth busted.

Ok, I started this post talking about flirtbuddies...funny how I don't have many flirtations anymore. Am I turning monogamous in my old age ? Or just been flirting with the wrong people. *laugh* that's probably it. Must stop flirting with people who are fairly nuts. Or utterly bonkers. Or who seem to be sane... ;) Ok, I have no clue...of course, when have I had a clue. Especially about relationships/women/dating/whatever ? *laugh* Oh well...I won't solve this possible quandry tonight/this morning. And yes, it's only a possible quandry...a real quandry would be more intresting ;)

But for some reason I'm not as sad a I was...

Btw, if you ever need to swap out text out of a large group of files, sed is your friend. This assumes that you're changing one word in every file to another word...if this is the case...
      for file in *.shtml; do sed 's/left/center/g' $file > $file.new; mv -f $file.new $file; done
is bloody useful :) It takes every file ending in .shtml in the dir, looks for the word 'left', and replaces it with 'center'. Very useful.

Well, I finally got Opera 7.10 installed on Shub-Internet. I'd downloaded it before, but snagged the wrong version...so today I grabbed the correct one, then installed.

First note...Opera actually cares about certain tags, like align in tables... which I'd never noticed before in IE or Netscape. So I spent awhile fixing all the tags on my website....oy. Then, I had to find new skins...since with 7, the old skins don't work....spend a while, and find a good one. (Metal Blue 07f if your curious). They also do fancy things with animation, like MacOSX...I turned that off very quickly. After that, well...it's not a big change from Opera6...it's got some new things I know nothing about, but on first glance it's not worse than the older version...which is rare in my experience with browsers. I'll post more as I find new things. :)

Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Vicious Rumors - Premonition
Well, I just got done rearranging my home network a bit. Straightened up some of the cables, adjusted some plugs...and oh yeah, setup some servers. I've been planning on setting up discordia as a firewall/gateway for the network... since I started working on building munchkin I've been routing everything though Shub-Internet. Which is a PITA when you're burning a cd, and someone is trying to surf at the same time. So I start tinkering with discordia, add a cdrom so I can install the various ipmasq files I'd need...and I run into headaches with the serial ports. I just hate AT motherboards. So after a few tinkerings, I gave up and turned to the remains of Yog-Software. Ok...resetup the box, boot, reset IP's and host name, copy DNS info over from the old machine. It's all good. the new discordia already had all the modem info, it was just a case of tinkering things into place. Then I setup the old box as a slave DNS server, named Malaclypse. Never setup a slave box before, but that went just fine. Easy as pie. So now I'm running primary and secondary DNS at home. Life is cool.

I do need to pickup some more ethernet cables, and some cables for my KVM switch, get all the servers connected correctly. Then I need to rebuild Yog-Software as a game machine, then...err...whatever else I can do :)

The Return of Dolly Sun Apr 13 15:42:26 CDT 2003
Mood: Slightly creeped out Music of the Day: Queensryche - I Will Remember
Well it looks like Dolly doesn't get to rest in peace...see this post from nature.com. Looks like our favorite cloned wool is going to be part of a display in Edinburgh's Royal Museum. Hmm, that's one way to spend eternity, on display for museum patrons... ;)

Anger Management and Slaughter Studio Sat Apr 12 00:22:02 CDT 2003
Mood: Multimedium ? Music of the Day: The One: DVD
Well, today I went with Rhiannon to see Anger Management. It's definitely a Adam Sandler flick. It's funny in spots, and seeing Jack Nicolson and Adam Sandler working together was intresting. But that wasn't enough to make the movie an enjoyable laugh. It was too angry, and too conived...to be honest I just didn't enjoy it. I may have just not been in the mood, or something...but I didn't enjoy it as much as some of Adam Sandler's other flicks. On the plus side, Jack Nicholson is superbly demonic looking in his role as a shrink gone a little nutzoid. So, you may like it better than I. As with all my reviews, your milage may vary... One definite plus...I got to see the latest preview for Matrix Reloaded. Now that was cool. This looks so flippin' cool it's scary. :) I can't wait for this and the Animatrix DVD to be released...

Later, I went to the local video store and came back with a few vids for the evening's viewing. We ended up watching The Haunting of Slaughter Studios. Now this was a bad movie, in a good way. Parody style horror movie, with lots of blood and guts and naked chicks. All the things that make bad movies worth watching. Basically, the plot is simple, a college (?) movie maker wants to make a low budget horror movie at a classic horror movie studio that's been closed since the death of it's biggest star. So, the movie crew sneaks in to fill the movie, and slowly each member of the crew is killed...classic horror movie style. It is a parody, and it's got lots of laughs, and it's pretty good IMHO. I'd recomend it over Anger Management...but that's just me :)

Smeg it is early... Fri Apr 11 07:41:39 CDT 2003
Mood: Groggy Music of the Day: Can't Smeg, Won't Smeg
Well, boy does waking up damn early suck. *yawn* Been watching stuff on Mplayer. New version is out I see...so I'm snagging it now. Trying to decide if I'm awake enough to start working on cleaning out the server rack here at Cabal23.net...or if I'll leave the cable snarls alone for another day. ;) I also want to setup Discordia to act as a dialup router, instead of Shub-Internet. Every time I do something CPU intensive, Rhiannon complains about the lack of speed. Poor lass. Also, once I have that done, I'm going to be doing some experimenting on Yog-Software. I downloaded the ISO's for Slackware while I was in Dallas, so I'm going to give Slack a chance :) Praise Bob ! Other than that, not much going on. Planning the construction of a desk here. Going to add a few feet of space to my desk, so I can spread out and have a gaming box and all that fun stuff :) Need to dig out my tape measure and some paper so I can design it.

Well, while I was in Fort Worth this week, I had YET ANOTHER CAR STEREO STOLEN !!!!!!! Sorry about that, I had to vent. Yep, I went up there for Nymaz's bday, and in the night my car got the window busted out, and the stereo stolen. Did the usual, called the cops got the reference info, all that good stuff. And I just changed my insurance to a lower rate, so I doubt the stereo will be covered. Maybe the window, but I doubt the stereo. *Grumble grumble* Life can stink some times...

Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Silence
Hey there, I've decided to join the ranks of the LiveJournal users. Mostly so I can read the friends-only posts of some people I know. I'm already running around in the perl code of some ofthe livejournal posting programs to see if I can add a way to post the content from here to LJ. Shouldn't be too hard...just have to find the formatting and posting bits. :) BTW, thanks to DessieBaybee for the code. You rock :)

    A Man Apart Sat Apr 5 22:26:53 CST 2003
Mood: Sleepy Music of the Day: Weird Al - I Was Only Kidding
Well, to recover from the Windows debicle of the last three days, me and Rhiannon went to see A Man Apart on Friday. We wanted to go see the The Core, But the next showing was 3 hours...so we went to plan B. A Man Apart wasn't what I expected, it was alot more serious than the last few Vin Diesel movies. And was more in the mood for something more light than this. But on reflection, it was better than I thought it was at first glance. Vin Diesel shows more acting talent that his usually streetwise wiseass. More emotions, more motivation than stay out of jail and blow things up. Which is a good thing to see in an actor. But it's not all gloom and doom, there are the occasional quips, and the drug sniffing chihuahua was hysterical. So, if your expecting XXX mark II, you won't be happy. But if you're wanting to see a character you actually do care about...plus guns, explosions, a little nudity, and a drug sniffing chihuahua...this is the movie for you.

Why I hate older hardware some days (part deux) Sat Apr 5 14:56:21 CST 2003
Mood: Still Frustrated Music of the Day: Danny Elfman - Return Message
Ok, day 3 of working on the #@&$@! computer. Yesterday was spent trying to make Yog-Software work as a wintendo. Failed. Couldn't get Yog to boot from the cd, or even see the cd files. ?????????? I think computers just hate me. The final killer was when Rhiannon noticed smoke coming from the monitor. The mouse was smoking. I've never seen a mouse smoke before. I pulled it up and found a hot spot on the monitor. I hope it's the monitor, because if the mouse spontainously combusted I'd be damn scared...After that, we gave up. We take threat of immoliation seriously in my family.

So today, Rhiannon went to her mom's to pick up an old 486 of hers. Old super heavy case...and an old super heavy 19" monitor. Pull my back out carrying stuff in. Setup the world's slowest computer, actually Rhiannon did most of it. :) Get it installed, and the munchkin is playing now. It's so cute it's scary... *hides*

Why I hate older hardware some days Thu Apr 3 22:18:27 CST 2003
Mood: Frustrated Music of the Day: Monty Python - The Penis Song
Rhiannon asked me a while back to build a computer for her 6 year old daughter, so she can play learning games and what not without using either of our desktops. Ok. Today, Rhiannon got a tad insistant. So off a geeking I go. First I dig out Rhiannon's old computer, a P120. Dust it off, add a hard drive, plug everything in...no picture. Play around awhile, decide that either the monitor or the video card is toasty. Test with another 15" we have around. Voila...we have pic...unless the vga plug is moved... it's very loose. Mental note, duct tape. Ok, now try to boot from cdrom. Nope, doesn't do that. *sigh* Ok, create boot disk from wintendo. While figuring that out, it boots into linux (what the disk had originally). Reboot, fdisk, try to install. Fail. Remember formatting. Cry quietly, format c: and install. Ok, life is good. Once it's done, no mouse. Ok, do some swaping of parts, go get a ps2 port, Still no mouse. Curse alot. Swap out for another motherboard. Get it all installed, then it comes up with a bios password. ARGH !!!! Spend an hour on the net finding a manual, and reading it (sideways, dumb scanners) Figure out how to clear the bios. Cool, then it doesn't post. Argh. Fix the ram (it unseated itself) start again, it posts...shows the harddrive on secondary and CD rom as primary. Ok...also shows the HD as a 5 gig. ??? At that point, I gave up...finished up this post (it's now 11:19) and I'm going to bed. The computer can wait til tomorrow *thud*

Banks Suck Thu Apr 3 16:28:11 CST 2003
Mood: Annoyed Music of the Day: Minstrels of Mayhem - Karubushka
Well, a few days ago my bank decided to upgrade their online banking software. Now when they did this, they set it so I could no longer use Opera. Bastards. So after a bit of fussing, I finally decided to install Netscape 6. Now I haven't been a big fan of Netscape since the big change from 4 to 6. Please note, this was after trying Galeon and Mozilla. No dice. So I install 6 from the SuSE cd's. Nope, doesn't like 6... wants 7. ARGH !!!!!!!!! Ok, spend a hour downloading 7, install it... register it, all that crap...and finally get in with my bank. Cool. To find out that the new pages are god awful ugly and hard to navigate. After much clicking and hunting, I find my balances. Sheesh...the old stuff showed me what I needed right off the bat...no fuss, no muss, no headaches. And why do I have a feeling this is no more secure than the older software. ARGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, I feel like Charlie Brown...still...I deserve some arghs....

Blade Runner Tue Apr 1 19:07:17 CST 2003
Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Blade Runner on DVD
Well, I'm sitting here off line watching i Blade Runner on DVD. I haven't watched this movie in years, even though I own it on VHS. And I think this is also the first time I've seen the director's cut. But with watching and reading P.K. Dick and Robert Anton Wilson as well as watching the Matrix, I was in the mood for something a little surreal. And boy, is this it :) I forgot how dark this movie is, both moodwise and film wise. Everything is low lights and drab colors. Fits PKD's view of the future. Rutger Hauer plays a great bad guy in this. Always a good movie if your in the mood for a dark scifi mindfsck :)

Happy April Fools Day Tue Apr 1 08:26:14 CST 2003
Mood: Sleepy Music of the Day: X Files - Cantus Excio
Well, April Fools started early. Rhiannon decided to play a prank on me, saying that all her gallery pages on her site weren't working. So I uploaded the pages to the site without even looking (We've had problems with the html pages corrupting, and I thought it was this again) Well, she was slightly disheartened that I didn't even look. As I told her, I was too groggy and too lazy ;) So, I wonder how many stories will get posted to Slashdot today...*yawn*
