Hey all, quick New Years news post. Today I went down to Altex today and
picked up a new case for Shub-Internet. I got a
Antec Soho case. comes with a 400 watt PS. 10 bays for drives, built in
casefans. ANd it's a lovely shade of black. So tomorrow, I'm shooting to
rebuild Shub with this case, her old motherboard/processor and ram, the mp3
drives from Discordia, and whatever else I can think of :) THis assumes
nothing melts down. Then, I'll be working on a new server/2nd workstation
setup. Again, if nothing melts down first ;) Wish me luck, I need it.

The Slinky song, stuck in my head forever.

Another Cthulhu filk, with a story. My dear Rhiannon tells me one evening
she had a great idea for a Cthulhu filk, but she couldn't remember the
tune. The next night she remembers it, and wakes my butt up to tell me.
She didn't have anything but part of the chorus...so I got to work and
came up with this.
the Cthulhu Theme song (sung to the Slinky song)
By Vulpine and Rhiannon
(apologies to the maker of Slinky)
Who sleeps if dead dreams in red
Comes out when the Stars are Right
Gibbers and screams Haunts your dreams
Everyone Knows it's Cthulhu
The biggest squid met He'll get you yet
The cultists will skin you alive
The Lord of the Frogs whom you want to snog.
Everyone Knows it's Cthulhu
Chorus:
Cthulhu, Cthulhu
dear god He's squamous and goo
Cthulhu, Cthulhu
The Dread Lord of R'yleh and Mu
Scared yet ?

Merry 2 1/2 shopping days til $HOLIDAY. I got bored, so I took a

You can see me chatting, working on procmail and counter foo. I figured out
from the logs of the various sites I host approx what hits I've gotten
in the last few months after migrating sites, and added them to the original
amount. Made Rhiannon pretty happy.
Need to hack together a guestbook for her, she's asked nicely :) I like
my cool new background, thanks to
Digital Blasphemy's user gallery. Check out the original

Not much else going on, need to finish $HOLIDAY shopping. Also need to
get some serious housegeeking in, setup some of the new machines I've been
planning/plotting. Maybe next week. We'll see.

Hi ho, Vulpine the Fox here. Bored out of my bloody gourd at work. Looking
for new and fun things to do in the world of geekdom. Well, last night I
got off my butt and got a DVD to AVI program running on shub-internet. It's
called
acidrip
and it looks pretty good. Spent last night turning
Ghost in
the Shell into a 2 gig avi...ok so I need to read the docs a bit better ;)
But, it looks like using
mplayer for dvd might work alot better than ogle or
xine. I'll play more tonight/this weekend.
Decided today to start doing Seti@home again. I guess I just want to find
ET. Joined a Discordian group as wellSeti 23
, I'm already #13 on their team with
my stockpile...makes me wonder where I'd be if I hadn't disabled seti. Need
to hack around with seti to make it work well on my dialup. Plus make it
not hammer my systems as much as it was last time. Shouldn't be too hard,
just have to sit down and make it happen.
Been working out yet another system rebuild/renaming scheme. Shub-Internet
isn't the only Geek Old One that will be lairing at Cabal23. I'm thinking
that a few more will be joining dear Shub. Haven't worked out all the ideas
yet, but it looks like I'll have a file server called scsi-thoth, and a
win-game box called yog-software. Maybe a dedicated DNS box called hashtur:
He who shall run named ? ;)
Not much else going on. Boring day as I said.

I learned something nifty about
Rhiannon a few nights ago. She's a telco engineer
in training. Or at least she's good with cables. Let me explain, we have
a little ball of orange fluff called Pixel. He's a klutz, just like his
dad. He leaped up to get on the cabinets, where his mom was sitting. Mom
had no intresting in bonding with her offspring, swatted him as he tryed
to get up there, he fell back, and took out our phone and answering
machine...and logging me off the 'net. Bad cat. I notice he's knocked
out the phone cord from the wall, plug it in. It falls out. Oops, he's
also knocked the phone jack out of the wall, or more to the point, back in
the wall. So I grouse and grumble, feel around and figure out I can't
reach it with my fingers. Check where the line is drawn though, nope, no
idea how this was put in. The hole is smaller than the jack. Rhiannon's ex
from a while ago installed this, and it seems he did things in the special
way. Ya know, riding the short bus kinda way. Ok. I'm not in the right
frame of mine to run wires...especially since my first thought was punch
though the wall with my fist and pull it out. So I step back and let Rhiannon
work on it, knowing that A. She's calmer, less likely to break things and
B. she is the Queen of Juryrig, as well as Oversharing. So I go take a
shower. In the time it took me to wash my hair, she somehow lassoed the
jack with a set of shoelaces and reattached it. Damn she's good :) So I
had email again, she gained geekpoints and everyone is happy.
I think she's at home right now, training my ferrets to run cable down
conduit. We'll be available for hire after the first of the year ;)

$HOLIDAY. Afford more toys for Rhiannon.
And after working all the darn overtime, I also should be able to afford some
geek toys for myself. Hmm...hard drive ? Dual monitor card ? 3rd 19"

I just got back from doing a little $holiday shopping. First stop, IHOP for
lunch...I needed the food to make it though the rest of the day. After
my repast, I headed to the local Fry's.
Got gifts for a few friends, including Rhiannon's brother. Saw alot of things I want too...I always do at Fry's.
I was good, I only got myself a copy of Heretic II for linux for $5. Give
me something to do when geeking doesn't inspire me, and while I wait to
build a gamebox. Didn't find one of the things I wanted to get
Rhiannon, so I paid for my booty and
made my way to Half Price Books,
and for once in my life I walked out there not getting anything, or even
finding anything I wanted to get. Kinda depressing. Then I hit a few
other places looking for this item for the cute redhead...no luck. :(
Oh well, we'll see if I can find it on the 'net, and get it here by $holiday.

Well, I should have known better. I took today off from work because
I woke up feeling like hell. Slept in, woke up feeling somewhat human,
decided it was a good day to upgrade shub-internet. So I tear into
the box, figure out first I can't find a screwdriver...well poo. So I
decided to just upgrade the hard drive and ram. Ram is easy, take out
one 128 meg dimm and add a 512 meg dimm. This takes me up to 896 megs.
Then I add the 40 gig drive. Doesn't work. Try it in all combinations
of drive, finally it dawns on me that it is an ATA-133. Motherboard doesn't
support it. *thud* Get up, go to Altex
find a ata133 pci controller and grab a screwdriver. Run the ol credit
card. Declined. *thud* Ok...wait til payday tomorrow to get it. Come home,
find screwdriver, decided to do the MB upgrade anyway. No heatsink or fan
for CPU. Test it, and it doesn't boot, and the processor is egg frying hot.
Ok...so rebuild old system (with added RAM). So everything is back to
the way it was, save I have alot more RAM, and a 40 gig drive in the
box, just not hooked up. Tomorrow I'll pick up the controller, and install
it over the weekend. As for the AMD motherboard, I'm thinking of just
picking up a fairly cheap ATX case, and using it for a game box. It doesn't
have enough PCI slots for me, and I was planning on replacing it fairly
quickly with a AthlonXP motherboard, or an
ABIT VP6 dual P3 motherboard. So I may just wait on getting that along
with a nifty new case, and rebuild the old fashioned way...from scratch.

Well, we all know about Shub-Internet, the Black Goat of 1k child

people know is there are others floating around the aether.
Yog-Software, Eater of Emails

Nyarlapotop, Demon God of the portable geek
AOL-athoth, A tale too terrible to tell!
Y'GNUonac, Richard Stallman's Lord and Master.

Hmm, sounds like a good naming scheme for a Discordian Geek with a fondness
for HP Lovecraft. Especially with a workstation named shub-internet ;)

I wrote a bit of news today while at work, and due to general exhaustion
and bleahness...I'm going to cram it all together into one post. Enjoy :)
Scripts
Ok, as you've probably noticed, I have my quotes script running again, along
with an uptime and a counter script. No big deal, when I was fixing apache,
I also fixed some httpd.conf stuff so I could do this crud easily. :) :) :)
Screenshots
On to a new plan...screenshots. Since I'm turning Cabal23.net into my geek
page, i've decided to migrate all my screenshots to that domain. And turn
all the multiwindow shots into single images. So I see alot of html editing
in my future, along with alot of gimping around. ;) Then writing a page on
cabal23 for screenshots with descriptions. Boy won't that be fun boys and
girls...*wonders how to make it merge automagickally*
Weekend Foo & Busy Fox
Busy busy busy fox. I've been working OT at Dell due to call volume.
Hasn't helped my sales, but I can use the OT. Went up to DFW for
thanksgiving weekend, after spending Turkey Day with Rhiannon's family. Was
a good time. Saturday night was a D/FW Ufies List gathering to celebrate
Techie's and Needo's bday. We
did the usual Ufie-Foo, movies puns and pool.
Watched parts of
Monty Python and the Holy Grail on dvd (new
release). Saw the Camelot scene done with legos, and the Knights who say Ni
and French Castle scenes in Japanese with English subtitles. Boy did
something get lost in translation *laugh* I need to get that DVD. I
also spent a good chunk of the night using Nymaz' bandwidth to grab anime, hentai and assorted other stuff. I
miss broadband. We can get some variety of cable access here in Austin, but
no ideas on how good it is. But it's got to be better than just dialup.
Treasure Planet
I went and saw Treasure Planet
this weekend. Very nice, one of the better
'pure' Disney movies to come out in recent years. Not so much singing to
fill in gaps in the plot, or fill out the time. Now Treasure Island was a
fave of mine growing up, both the movies and the book. This stuck to the
story enough to not offend the purist in me, but branched out nicely, taking
the story to someplace new. I loved the look of the solar powered
spaceships, being treated like old fashioned sail rigged craft. :)
David
Hyde-Pierce shows that he is one of the best vocal actors out there. He
doesn't need to appear on screen, he can express emotions very well with
just his voice. It's good for kids, if a touch violent, but it won't bore
adults...especially any adult who ever wanted to be a pirate.
Linux Flernage
Still working on DVD playback under linux. From what I've seen, I need to
check the kernel for MTRR playback, and if that doesn't work...upgrade the
video card. Well, since I'm upgrading everything else in
shub-internet, I
guess I'll mod up the video card as well. ATI is sounding good, especially
if I can get the hardware dvd decoder working. Already I have a FIC AZ-31
motherboard, 512 meg dimm, Duron 950 processor and a 40 gig IDE drive for a
/home partition. Will make for a nifty system when I'm done. I also want
to get a new case from Newegg.com to put all this in. We'll see :)
