Queen of the Damned
|
Sun Feb 24 00:09:10 CST 2002
|
|
Well Friday I went to see Queen
of the Damned. I liked it. Alot. Anne Rice fanatics will not like it,
it's a mix of The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned, cutting lots of
the backstory and plot. But I liked it, plenty of violence, lots of
vampires, the story moved alot better than any of her books. It needed alot
more backstory explaining IMHO, but I can understand why they didn't...
would have made the movie rather slow. Aaliyah played a rather good Akasha, and the sexy redhead (every movie
should have one) was played quite nicely by
Marguerite Moreau.
Always nice to have well acted eyecandy ;) Go see it, unless you take
vampirism seriously...

Argh !!!
|
Tue Feb 19 17:14:08 CST 2002
|
I hate when I'm a moron.
Going though my home machines, and tweaking up security. I'm behind a
fairly stable firewall, so I've been lax. So get my nazi hat on, and
start locking crap down. Lock down Fennec, my fileserver,
hosts.deny
ALL:ALL
While working on hosts.allow I suffer a major brainfart, and forget how
to open up my internal IP block. Ask
Squeaker, and somewhere in there
I log out. Telnet back in to the box...bounce. And this box has ssh issues,
ARGH !
I really, really, REALLY need to reformat this box and redo the / partition,
too many b0rked things. But that has to wait til I get home and console
in.
Lesson of the Day: Do not play security nazi remotely...always better
to console in.

Kernel update
|
Fri Feb 15 19:17:08 CST 2002
|
|
Not a big news, after having some issues with X crashing, I decided to update
my kernel, see if that helps any. Plus in general I've heard alot of people
have issues with 2.4.14. So I snagged the source, updated my kernel, and
procede to see Lilo barf. :( After much arguing, I finally reinstalled
an old 2.2 kernel from SuSE's ftp site.
And somehow that fixed lilo. I'm confused, but happy. So now I'm running
2.4.17...and from what I hear, 2.4.18 will be out soon...oh well, the
price I pay for being cutting edge. Well, semi-cutting edge...I haven't
started messing with 2.5 yet. Yet.

Are you Addicted to the Internet?
Hardcore Junkie (61% -
80%) While you do get a bit of sleep every night and sometimes
leave the house, you spend as much time as you can online. You usually have
a browser, chat clients, server consoles, and your email on auto check open
at all times. Phone? What's that? You plan your social events by contacting
your friends online. Just be careful you don't get a repetitive wrist
injury...

Collateral Damage and Legend of the Rangers.
|
Mon Feb 11 17:42:40 CST 2002
|
Well, I kept up with my movie addiction this last weekend. I went and saw
Collateral Damage on Friday.
It was...ok. The plot was fairly obvious, and darn it all, Arnie didn't
have any uber cool lines. Not a catchphrase in sight. And we all know that's
why we see Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. On the plus side, Arnold actually
does a bit of real emotional acting in this movie, which was a shock.
I'd recomend this as a rental movie, unless you just need to see something
explode.
More intrestingly, I also watched the newest Bab5 spinoff pilot,
Legend of the Rangers. Was
pretty good, in my not so humble opinion. I especially liked the main
Minbari character, aka 'Hero's mystic buddy with the sarcastic attiude'.
I hope this series goes better than the last Bab5 spinoff...and I get to
see more episodes.

State of The Fox Address
|
Thu Feb 7 18:39:24 CST 2002
|

Hmm, call this a status report of non-geeky (or only quasi geeky) stuff going
on in my life. Not alot, been fighting my depression on and off since the
year started. For those who don't know, I have Clinical Depression. So
I have periods of low to moderate grade depression with no cause. At least
no outside cause. So, if everything is going great in my life, I can still
be sad. It sucks, but it's been fairly under control for a while. Now I
have been avoiding prescription drugs to control it for years...I don't like
drugs. For a while I was on Saint John's Wort as a herbal control, but
after it stopped working very well, I dropped off it. So I've been
controlling it by diet, exercise (yeah right), and willpower. But the last
2 months have been bad...I tend to cycle badly in the winter, I guess not
enough sun...so starting last Sunday, I went back on Saint John's Wort.
Now, suppostedly St John's takes 4-6 weeks to take effect. But I've noticed
a small change already. I don't know how much of that is psychosomatic, and
how much is actual effect...but I hope it keeps up. I don't like being
sad. If the St John's Wort doesn't work, I'm going to go ahead, see a
doctor and see about a more 'medical' option. (Yes, I wrote this on a
website, I'm willing to see a doc if this doesn't work...now don't faint. ;)
Most people who know me in RL know I don't deal well with doctors...but
I'm tired of being a sad fox, so if I have to, I have to...Now if anyone knows
a redheaded female doctor with a fondness for long hairs...let me know ;)

New Script in Foxwerks
|
Wed Feb 6 19:51:56 CST 2002
|
|
Well, just cause I'm bored, I updated my journalism script so that anyone
can use it. Originally it was full of hardcoded links to stuff, worked
good for me, not so hot for anyone wanting to use it. So I replaced all
the hard code with variables, commented it just a tad, and put it up on
Foxwerks. Go download it,
here.

FoxWerks
|
Mon Feb 4 23:37:33 CST 2002
|
Well, I have yet another new project. I've written a number of scripts that
make my life easier, including a random sig generator, a mail backup
script, a generic backup script and the script that sets up all the news
on this page. I'm slowly rewriting each one into a format that's generic,
with detailed install instructions. Go to
foxwerks.cyberfox.org and check it
out. The only script up is the mail backup, check em out.
Additional note, the term FoxWerks is stolen happily from the
Skunk Works, where most of the advanced aircraft designed in the US were
developed. Well, I'm not much of a skunk...so I changed the term ;) Sue

The Mothman Prophecies
|
Mon Feb 4 17:33:17 CST 2002
|
|
I just saw The Mothman Prophecies
last night. I knew it was going to be weird, and it was weird...but it
was also slow. Molasses slow. Tax return check slow. Basically
a reporter is haunted/stalked by a extra-human being that predicts disaster.
Weird things happen to him, and the people in a town in West Virginia. It's
a pretty good movie, but the plot just drags...but to be honest, I dont know
how they could have sped it up without making it alot more confusing. I
also didn't like some of the camera work, lots of odd aerial shots that faded
out to blurry images, like we had a Moth's eye view. It was ok the first time
or two, but then it got annoying. Now I read something about good ol' Mothy
in a book on cryptozoology (the
study of mysterious or legendary animals), and I think they got alot of
the details right....but it's been too long since I read it. Hmm, maybe
this will start a trend, and we'll see something about my favorite Crypto...
Chupacabra. :)
