DiamondJune 25th 2001
Well, I finally uploaded a bunch of pics of my cat Diamond. Go take a look. Later this week I'll see if I can post something about my other psych...err, kitty, Trinity. ;)

CampingJune 25th 2001
Well I went camping this weekend, out at Lake Tawokani (about 2 hours east of Dallas). I had a good time, other than too many bugs and just a touch too warm for me. Texas camping season is either March-May, or October-November. Otherwise it's too warm or too cold (though I rather it be cold). Got too much sun, enjoyed a break from techtoys. Though I'm glad to be home, with A/C and showers with hot water.

LiskaJune 25th 2001
I was playing with my laptop last week, while cleaning out my office. I set it up with a 15" monitor, keyboard and a mouse. So I have a 2nd Windows workstation here at the Vulpine's Den. I'm probably going to switch it to dual boot linux again one of these days. But it's kinda cool having another box sitting in the corner. Also the Network page is updated with the new details.

Well, I got bored, and decided to do one last screenshot for a while. No xinerama = not as much fun, but I've worked around it I think. It's crowded, and I'm used to looking at netscape at the same time as IRC. But I'll live. And when I can afford it, I'll go back...with better quality monitors. I hear Viewsonic are pretty good. So here it is.

Rebuilt KitsuneJune 19th 2001
Well, I got Kitsune back up and running. Had a bitch of a time installing debian on the system, logs not logging, x not running, stuff like that. So after a nice screaming fit, I reinstalled SuSE. Got most everything I use running, minus Xine and a few of Tom's programs. Imlib2 just refuses to run. Grr. Oh well, close enough for yucks and grins. Still getting used to 1 monitor, probably have this setup for a while. Oh well, that which doesn't kill me, better run really damn quick. :)

Job CrapJune 19th 2001
Well, it's offical, I no longer work for Hyperusa. I don't want to go into details, partially because I'm sick of telling the story, partially because badmouthing former employers, even when justified, is bad job karma. Lets just say I'm avoiding jackhammers, pickaxes and ditches in general for a long time to come. If you REALLY want the scoop, email me and I'll fill you in. So back to job hunting for me. And with the markets so bad, I'm half expecting to get some _really_ low paying job so I can make rent and car payment and whatnot, deeper into debt I slide...but at least it's a controlled slide. Who knows, maybe something good will happen of all this. Sheesh I hope so.

Tomb RaiderJune 19th 2001
I saw Tomb Raider last Friday. I'm mixed about it, it was unabashedly a bad action movie, with lots of effects and guns and cleavage. The acting wasn't too bad, with Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf fame paying a rather funny butler. Angelina Joile is pretty, but I'm not one of her biggest fans, sexy English accent or no. All in all, it was worth the money, but not worth quite the hype. Funny tidbit, the Illuminati are the bad guys in this flick, and all I could think was "Gee, the guys down at Illuminati Online (My first ISP, oh so many years ago) didn't seem so bad. ;)

Monitor CrapJune 17th 2001
Well one of the 19" monitors that I was using on Kitsune decided to flake out tonight. So no more Xinerama/Dual head setups for a while. This is really pissing me off. *sigh* Just a cruddy week all in all. Maybe it's time to give up on computers and go back to living in books. Books don't crash. Books don't segfault. Books don't drive you nuts. Hell, you could say the same thing about life in general compaired to books. *sigh* Bleah, being moody sucks.

Job FooJune 16th 2001
Well, I knew being comfortable at work wouldn't last. I don't want to go into details right now. But I'm back looking for employment. I'll write more when I know what's going on.

Big BrotherJune 16th 2001
On to less volitile subjects, I did a bit of hacking on Big Brother this last week. Got it working and monitoring, and all that jazz. Funfunfun. Also got MySQL and MRTG installed on Vulpes (apt-get is good), now to configure them :)

ScreenshotJune 16th 2001
Well I got bored and messed with the layout of my desktop again. Also back to the borderless, transparent aterms for BitchX and Pine. And some people were curious on #dfwufies so here it is.

More Vulpes NewsJune 12th 2001
Woohoo, I'm turning into the biggest Debian fan in the world. Yesterday I installed Apache, Sendmail, proftpd, and a few other toys. No hitches, no headaches...well other than Debian puts files in some odd, but logical places. Just not where I'm used to things. So last night, I get bored... and decide to install BIND, and configure Vulpes to act as a primary name server for my network. Now my network runs on non-routable IP's, so if I fscked up...nothing bad would happen. So I create the files, per Linux.org's DNS HOWTO. Reverse works fine, forward doesn't. An hour of hacking around, copying stuff from other people's DNS records and general headbanging later, I find my problem. And as usual for DNS errors, it was a . Just a . A stupid . I hate .'s. ;) But then it worked. Now, all the machines at home are using vulpes for DNS. It's very very cool. Especially since I've never build a Bind 8 server from scratch. Very nifty. Not sure what to do next...maybe get MySQL and apache to play together...maybe SlashCode...maybe even an internal irc/jabber server. Ok, so they are useless without a real connection. Oh well, maybe someday. Well, I just thought of one thing I need...backups. Maybe I'll move the zip drive over from Kitsune to Vulpes. Not like I use it much on Kitsune. We'll see.

Emails emails emailsJune 7th 2001
Yet another email address, thanks to The Grim Squeaker for the nifty address. :)

Fun with DebianJune 6th 2001
Well I had an amusing day of playing with Debian. Got a new kernel installed first thing. Why debian doesn't allow for SMP off the bat is beyond me, but it gave me an excuse to run 2.4.5, First kernel install I've done without a hitch. Woohoo. Then I apt-get'ed (apt-got?) a number of packages, sendmail, BitchX, stuff like that. Then I got to Pine. Pine isn't covered under Debian due to licensing issues. So no apt-getting the easy way. So I try to download it the not so easy way, and spend a long while watching it try to compile. So I grab the source, and try again... still slower than hell, then I see an error...no ncurses. Well, curses, no ncurses. So I grab that lib, install (apt-get is my friend), recompile pine and bingo...alls well with the world. All I have left is getting Xfree86 4 to run. Then I'll be ready to upgrade Kitsune.

Vulpes RebornJune 5th 2001
Well, thanks to Jander and a 6.4 gig hard drive, vulpes is back among the living. Running Debian Linux, so far all I've got configured is the base stuff. But I've got time, now to remember how to config X. I got spoiled with SuSE's SAX2 program. Oh well, I'll let you know how it goes.

ScreenshotJune 5th 2001
New screenshot for your viewing pleasure. Due to a limitation in desktop space, I went back to using virtual desktops. So technically my desktop space is 3200x2400. Ye gods. I really need a 3rd 19" monitor, but I can't afford it (and the one on Reynard is going funky). So this will work 'well enough' for now. A little reorganization is fun ;)

Seti@CyberfoxJune 2nd 2001
Well, as of today, I've been a Seti@Home user for 2 years. In that time I've turned in some 3228 results, and generated 6 years of CPU time. Not bad for a geek. Haven't found any Klingons or Vorlons yet. Maybe next month.

Todays GeekingJune 2nd 2001
Well, I've gotten off my butt and started work on some geekystuff. I installed a new hard drive on Vulpes, and am in the process of installing Debian Linux on it. But I ran into some headaches. Like a harddrive failure. :( Oh well, I knew the drive wasn't too reliable...and nothing was on it but the base debian install. Of course apt-getting all the stuff I wanted was nifty. No cd's for install past the base. Cable access is good. Oh well, I'll try again after I dig up a new hard drive. :)
