Rebuilt Shub-Internet: Part 1 Sun Mar 28 19:03:28 CST 2004
Mood: Tired Music of the Day: Nostradamus on the History channel
Well I spent today working on Shub-Internet, specifically installing the new motherboard and CPU. Pretty much I did the install to stop Shub from occasionally locking up. This didn't fix it, when copying or writing large files, the system may lock. So, it's not the motherboard. I don't think it's the RAM, the RAM tests ok...but I'm going to test it anyway, later. Or it might be the 30 gig root drive Shub uses. So I may swap drives with another one when I want to upgrade SuSE. I'm thinking of waiting til 9.1 comes out. But now Shub has a Duron 950, and a nice new motherboard. I'm going to use the old motherboard and CPU to build a Wintendo in the near future, it won't be a top of the line...but it will play Diablo II, and Worms Armageddon. And that's good enough for now. Wish me luck. :)

Ned Kelly Thu Mar 25 22:29:05 CST 2004
Mood: Tired Music of the Day: Stargate SG1 on TV
Well today, me and Amythest went to see Ned Kelly this evening, and ye gods was it depressing. Realistic looking, possibily historically accurate, but very depressing and hard to under stand. Heath Ledger spoke in a very thick Irish/Aussie mixed accent that was hard for me to understand. Very bloody as well, realisticly bloody (which I do appreciate in a film). It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. Orlando Bloom did make the film more enjoyable, playing the classic womanizing rogue. But, unless you live for outlaw movies or Aussie history, this probably isn't a movie you'd want to pay full price for.

Movie Review: Dawn of the Dead Sat Mar 20 00:50:03 CST 2004
Mood: Tired Music of the Day: None
Well I went and saw Dawn of the Dead tonight. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, remakes are rarely good. This was a pleasant suprise. It was a good remake of the original film, with plenty of suprises, lots of gore, and some good pacing. The acting was ok, not great but not bad. There were some major differences, specifically in the zombies. In the original series of movies the zombies were slow and clumsy, showing like a corpse might move. In the new movie, they took a page from 28 Days Later and made the zombies alot more mobile and aggressive. In some ways this wasn't as creepy, but it worked well in others. The movie was alot more action oriented and the zombies fit that better. And the movie did something that rarely happens with me in horror movies. It actually made me jump, and in one scene, it actually disturbed me. Now that's rare. Note, this is not a movie for the squeemish or sensitive. But if you like a little of the old ultraviolence, you may enjoy it.

Shub-Internet Upgrade Thu Mar 18 23:19:49 CST 2004
Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Lacuna Coil - Circle
Well, some good news on the geek front. I got the CPU I ordered for Shub in the mail today. It's only a Duron 950, but it works in the motherboard I got for Shub, and I can upgrade later (when I have cash). So probably tomorrow night or this weekend I'll be rebuilding good ol Shubby. I'm also adding 'new' hard drives and upgrading to SuSE 9.0. Oh boy, will this be fun ;) And I mean that in a mostly non sarcastic way.

For those keeping score, Shub's new stats will be...
  • Antec SX1040BII SOHO File Server ATX Case
  • MSI K7T Turbo Socket A Motherboard ATA RAID
  • AMD Duron 950
  • 512 megs RAM (dropping the 256 dimm for the gaming box I'm working on)
  • 12 gig IDE hard drive (/:)
  • 40 gig IDE hard drive (/home:)
  • 20 gig IDE hard drive (/media/mp3:)
  • 12 gig IDE hard drive (/media/files:)
  • Generic 16x DVD-Rom
  • Generic 10x/32x/40x CD-RW
  • Matrox Millenium II 8 meg Cards (3)
  • KDS 19" monitor
  • Generic 17" monitor (2)
  • Netgear 10/100bT NIC
  • Logitech Elite Keyboard
  • Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse

Ok...I'm the first to admit, I'm a big geek. I used to be a bigger geek, carrying around my Palm III, cell phone, two-way pager, and leatherman, but when my pants starting falling alot, and my belt groaned under the weight, I pared that down (that and I lost my leatherman, and got rid of the two-way pager.) But after seeing this I feel strangely...lacking ;) Now I want a utility vest as well, and all the toys that go with it. ;)

Weekend Report Sun Mar 14 19:03:54 CST 2004
Mood: Tired Music of the Day: Pit and the Pendulum on video
Well, I survived the weekend. Got some of my planned stuff for the weekend done. Not all of it, but that's ok.

  • Laundry: Done
  • Unpacking: Done
  • Geeking: Got a little done, but nothing major.
  • GitS marathon: One episode does not a marathon make.
  • Hanging out with friends: Done
  • Seeing M&C: didn't do.
  • Sleep: Not enough
  • Reading: Got quite a bit done.
  • General Slacking: Fair about of slack.

I also got some cleaning done, the Ferrets are happy. Right now I'm fighting to stay awake. We'll see how well that works. Watching Pit and the Pendulum right now. Definitely been in the mood for bad movies. And boy is this one bad. But bad is oh so good :)

  • Long time, no Screenshot Sat Mar 13 00:21:11 CST 2004
Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Metallica - Master of Puppets

Yeah it's been a long time since I did a screenshot. But I've been tweaking my desktop abit, and felt like sharing. Triple monitors are a very good thing, so are pics of lovely redheads ;)

For those of you new to my habit of taking desktop pics, what you are looking at is my desktop for my Linux box, Shub-Internet. She has 3 monitors, 2 17" and 1 19". All three display a linked desktop, thanks to the wonder of Xinerama. On the far left you see a bunch of icons, they are for the Gnome MC program (a file manager). Under that is an Enlightenment epplet that acts like a Magic 8-ball. Next to that is my Opera browser and a system monitor program called gKrellm. Next screen we have the lovely Rose McGowan, a couple of Eterms, one showing the system log. I use a program called Xdaliclock to tell time, and Xmms for mp3 playback. 3rd desktop is communication, with Mail, IRC, and Gaim. Gaim is a multi-protocol chat client, which I use for AIM and ICQ. I also have logs running showing my mail activty.

Yes I am that bored that I sat down and documented out my desktop. Right now I'm eating Poptarts and watching the first episode of GitS: SAC. Probably not going to do a marathon tonight, but I may watch a few. We'll see.

Weekend Plans Wed Mar 10 01:36:57 CST 2004
Mood: Good Music of the Day: Ghost in the Shell: SAC soundtrack - Lithium Flower
Since I have nothing set in stone for this weekend, I'm musing over ideas of what to do this weekend. So far I've got the following list.

  • Laundry. I always need to do laundry.
  • Finish unpacking/put remaining stuff in storage in the closet.
  • General computer geeking. Haven't gotten to do much of that lately, and I'm jonsing.
  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex marathon. Probably while doing laundry and/or geeking.
  • Hanging around with friends.
  • Going to see Master and Commander again. It's still showing in the good theaters around here...
  • Sleep. Lots of sleep.
  • Reading. That's a given.
  • General slacking.

Sounds like a good plan for the weekend, don't ya think.

Not much to post, I'm still alive and kicking. Hoping I'll repeat last weeks 8 hours of comatoseness. We'll see. Not alot else going on. Maybe I'll have a update worth mentioning in the near future.

Mood: Good Music of the Day: Nightwish - Bare Grace Misery
Just a quick note...fox got some today.

    Sleep that is. ;)

9 glorious hours of unconsciousness, broken only once by strange noises outside my apartment. I got up long enough to check the locks, and back to bed I went. :) Real, unanxious, unnightmared sleep. *happy dance* Lets see if tomorrow is the same.

Weekend Fun Tue Mar 2 03:42:06 CST 2004
Mood: Bored Music of the Day: Nightwish - She is My Sin
And since I'm bored, I decided to post my busy busy weekend activities. Friday I called the car place, found out it would probably be Monday before I got my car. Cursed alot, went back to sleep. Ended up way oversleeping, especially with me having to work Saturday morning. Little chance of getting a good night's sleep. I woke up, watched TV, ate dinner, generally was lazy. Went to bed around 1 or so, woke up again 4am and was wide awake. Went to work, worked a very dull and slow 4 hours.

Left work, got picked up by Amythest. Went and deposited my paycheck, then went with her cloth shopping. A friend is getting married, and she wanted some company and opinions on wedding dress material. So we went to Dallas to the wholesalers area. Lots and lots of warehouses selling damn near anything I could think of. And we hit I think, 5 cloth shops. Let me tell you, nothing kills the testosterone in your system like several hours of looking at fabric. ;) We found stuff she liked, then headed to a Chinese place for lunch. Ok buffet food, not great, but not bad. Then we headed to an Indian store to look at saris. Well, they looked at saris, I tried to stay awake. Mostly succeeded.

From there the plan was to head to Squeaker and SugarFae's to meet up and head for dinner and a movie. But since everyone was running on about next to no sleep, we decided to settle on just dinner. So off we went to a little hole in the wall Japanese place. I had a chicken and rice bowl that was very damn yummy. I wasn't very hungry, but I think I did a pretty good job of eating. Must go back. Then we headed back to the apartment by way of Walmart, where Squeaker and SugarFae did some TV shopping, but couldn't find what they wanted. Once we got back, I ended up calling it a night and heading home. Where I promptly passed out and stayed out til the next morning.

Woke up the next day, got ready for gaming and headed on over. Gaming was fun as usual. Went with Squeaker and Nymaz to another electronics place to look at TV's. A TV was procured, and back to the Rat's nest we went. Nice TV, good price. I may look at getting one in the near or distant future. From there I went home and, well the plan was to take a quick nap because I was worn to a frazzle. I ended up sleeping more like 4 hours. ACK. Woke up, was going to do laundry...no detergent. Crap. And no way I was going to walk to the store to get detergent, I was just too physically tired still. So I hung around the house. And of course, the mood swings kicked in. :( I hate my mood swings. Specifically these were worries about the car, and 'Weekend is over too fast' swings. I ended up not sleeping til about 7am Monday morning. I got some sleep Monday am, but not enough...then I was off dealing with carfu.

So, it was an OK weekend, not great...but not bad. The Japanese place I must go to again. Any place that makes you sit on tatami mats and only has chopsticks for silverware is hellacool. Next weekend hopefully will be a bit more active, since I'm wheeled again. :)

Hurrah For Wheels Mon Mar 1 22:32:35 CST 2004
Mood: Good Music of the Day: None
Well, I got my car back. For those not in the know, I had major car issues last week. Today, after 5 days in the shop, they were resolved and I have a car that stops when I want it to again, instead of stopping when inertia ran out. So after a complete redo of my brake system, I'm mobile again. Which is good, since I was getting sick of walking to work. It's only a little over a mile, but for an out of shape geek walking in the middle of the night, that's a bit much. Of course, walking the 2+ miles to the mechanic was less fun today. But the car is back, and I'm a happy producer of hydrocarbons again.
