Happy Turkey Day Thu Nov 28 11:49:19 CST 2002
Mood: Ready for Dinner Music of the Day: Mike Oldfield - Sunset Door
Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans and people who like eating turkey. I'm here playing with code while Rhiannon is making something for tday feast with her family. Smells good, lots of Garlic. *grin* Life is good. :) So go eviserate a bird today :)

FoxShot fork Thu Nov 28 11:44:30 CST 2002
Mood: Very Geeky Music of the Day: Mike Oldfield - The Bell
I've actually had my first code fork. In my foxshot screengrabber script. Originally it used import to snag the images, then convert to make a thumbnail. Then I rewrote it to use Tom Gilbert's scrot program. But to change the foxshot I have available on Cabal23.net would also make people have to install imlib2, giblib, scrot and a bunch of other stuff, that some people may not want or need to or just plain be able to. So I'm forked the devel, the original foxshot will stay the same, and I'm splitting the new imlib2 into a new code branch, with a new name. Now to come up with a new name. Any suggestions ?

Well, I got Xine running last night, and playing .avi files. For those who know me, know that this is one of the reasons I kept a windoze box around, since avi's were a bitch to run. No longer. Now it's as easy as pi=22/7 :)I'd post a screenshot, but for some reason xine comes up as a blue screen. I dunno.

Well, for those who are big fans of Lord of the Rings, I give you the 21st century Hobbit Hole. Now as a geek I find this very cool. As a claustrophobe I find it kinda scary. But since I'm not too bad in underground garages, if I keep it very open inside I'd probably really enjoy it. Anyone got alot of spare concrete pipe and some land to loan me as a test ? ;)

Well I decided to change my desktop again. Nothing wrong with the Anime Girl...but I wanted something...else. And since my workstation has become Shub-Internet, I wanted something a little weirder. So I found it.

Nope, not much has changed, but I felt like showing off a little.

Ok....here's all the news that's fit to print...

I KICKED APACHE's ASS BACK INTO LINE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about that, but I've been putsing around with apache for a while now, and seriously trying to figure out what was up with my pages. Then I figured it out...Here's my post to the UFList about the fix...

FYI, if you have mutiple entries on httpd.conf file for the same domain, make sure they match otherwise ssi fails.

Wes had two IP's bound with duplicate entrys for a server migration, for some reason that's what was borking SSI. Comment out the unneeded entries, and it starts working.

*thud*

Can I go home now...

Vulpine, who read two copies of httpd.conf looking for goofs...and happened upon the dupe entry.

Needless to say I be happy...damn happy. I'm still a Webmaster...allthough a bit of a slow one. *happy dance* Now to fix Rhiannon's website counter, and start doing all the fancy things I've been plotting to do with Cabal23.net and Cyberfox.

Well, I wanted to show my new slightly more upbeat desktop after a few more changes. The wallpaper has changed, and I'm making an effort to get used to multi-head instead of xinerama...the reason, I want to add some non-1600x1200 monitors to my system. multihead allows me to run them independantly. Which is a 'very good thing'. Not as cool as xinerama, but livable. Plus using Tom Gilbert's scrot program allows me to join the desktops into one image. VERY cool.

Here's the shot.

You can see my usual programs running, along with virtual desktops for the first time in years. More experimenting. Also see a pic of Toyzz.com model and pr0nstar Taylor Wayne with a stuffed cthulu. What's funny, I sent her an email a while back when I saw her modeling on Toyzz (which is just toys, not much smut) ;) asking about a stuffed Cthulhu pic. Well, ask and ye shall receive. *grin* Btw, if you like the background...feel free to snag it from Cabal23.net. Maybe tomorrow I'll have all the cabal23.net stuff in a directory...*laugh* Ok, probably not.

GAIM CVS fun Thu Nov 21 08:27:49 CST 2002

Well, I finally got all of gtk2 libs running, so I went and snagged the latest cvs version of gaim, and installed it. And well, it's ok. Looks weird. I'll stick to the gtk1 version for now, since it uses gtkthemes, and I don't know how to make gtk2 use themes, or what themes to use. ;) What can I say I'm an eyecandy fan. And I'm used to the mac'ish theme of my desktop now. Actually like it even :) And no, this doesn't mean my next system will be an iMac...maybe one of those dual processor G4's with linux on it. ;) Especially with this case mod. Kinda cool ain't it. Rhiannon's brother showed this to me...makes me almost want to be a mac user...except I can do this under linux ;) Actually I do have plans to make my next linux box into something a tad more casemodded. Add lcd display in the case, toggle switch fan control, stuff like that. Maybe even some lights if I'm really bored. :) What can I say, the geek in me is getting creative.

Well, most everything save server side includes are working on the website. I'm vaguely annoyed at this, but not at the admin. *waves at WesM. Since I can't work on the website and see what I'm doing, I've been upgrading my GTK stuff. Moving to the new 2.0 idea, so I can run CVS Gaim among other things. Also got Ogle DVD Player running as well. Not bad once I turned on DMA on my dvd drive. It would probably run better in multiscreen mode over Xinerama, but I don't want to relearn how my desktop is going to draw itself. I'm used to Xinerama. Got discordia fully moved over to ReiserFS, only lost about 200 megs of mp3's I almost never listed too, so I'm not too upset. The new keyboard is working like a champ. Actually getting used to it and all the fancy buttons. Work is ok, had a pretty damn good day today. Not much else. I'll post more when I get bored, or when the server works again :)

Well, the website is back up. Not that you can see it right now, since we're having Apache issues. But that will be working soon.

...but I want my email. But enough whining, on to content. I got bored with my usual fairly dark and monochromatic desktop. So I went out, grabbed a background from ToyBox Arts, modified it to be Cabal23.netish, and went to town. The result...

So now I have a Mac OSX vaguely looking desktop, with bright colors and a perky anime discordian on it :) Ok, so it's not Tara Monroe, I like my background :) And having a MtDew skin for Xmms. *grin* Life is good :)

Discordia rebuild. Mon Nov 18 08:02:32 CST 2002
Mood: Still bleah... Music of the Day: The sound of harddrive fans
On to other geekyness, I finally finished the conversion to ReiserFS on discordia. Still moving Mp3's back to the server, but I should have that all done by later today. Had some issues with the 60 gig drive. It was originally partioned as two 30gig partitions. Well, after clearing the drive, I wanted to make it one 60 gig. No luck, fdisk as well as SuSE's yast program both b0rked when trying to rewrite the partitions. :( Oh well. Maybe when I get a 120 gig drive I'll be able to try again ;) Haven't noticed any performance changes, but I'm a touch more comfy running a journaling FS.

Well it looks like podge.cabal23.net (aka skylab.wyvern.org) decided that it didn't like the rebuild that WesM did. The box is up, it even responds. But no mail and no pages. Looks like the apache.conf hasn't been rebuilt yet, along with qmail. And no shell access either :( So why am I writing this ? boredom mostly. *laugh* I also wanted to get some more news posts up for November ;) Yes I'm that bored.

New Keyboard Sun Nov 17 21:40:51 CST 2002
Mood: Geeky Music of the Day: Spider Robinson - Belaboring The Obvious
Well, I went out and bought a new keyboard today. OfficeMax was selling the Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard for $10 off, and I had a $20 off coupon...so it cost me about $15. :) Now I used to use a basic MS Ergonomic, then an old IBM "clicky clack" keyboard. I like ergonomics, I type so much I need them. But I had issues with my old one and linux, it locked alot (not sure if it was due to hardware issues or OS issues). So I switched to the nice plain mechanical one. But I got bored, and damn it's loud. So after much debate I decided to take a shot at MS keyboards again.

Well, like most keyboards under linux it worked right out of the box, at least the normal keys. Now the fancy little hotbuttons, they don't work out of the box in linux. You have to tinker with getting keycodes and setup xmodmaps to point to the keycodes. I figured out how to do it thanks to Mandrake's website. He did it on his laptop to play with Xmms. Well my keyboard has alot more options, so I did a little tinkering and set it up to open email, Gaim, Eterms, as well as opening Gnome Midnight Commander windows to display docs and Mp3's. I have a few more things to setup, like setting a logout button to do something, and turn the sleep button into screensaver mode. But I like it, the keyboard is nice and quiet, and not mushy. And I think it was worth the money, how little I payed that is ;) Later, when I have a touch more time, I'll post a HOWTO on setting this up.

Ghost Ship Sun Nov 17 21:10:43 CST 2002
Mood: Ok Music of the Day: Minstrels of Mayhem - You Fscking Bitch
Well, me and Rhiannon went out to the movies on Friday night. The movie of choice was Ghost Ship. Now I love horror movies, and I love movies set on the sea. So this should have been pretty good. Well, it wasn't horrible....but it wasn't amazing. Standard formula for ghost movies, with the basic premise of lost ocean liner, gold and evil nastys oozing in. No shocks, no spookyness, and a fairly obvious plot twist. But it could have been much worse...but after seeing The Ring I'm slightly pickier about my movies ;)

Speaking of movies, got the DVD of Star Wars II. Haven't sat down to watch all the special features, but so far it's not bad. The movie holds up better for multiple viewings than EpI. Yoda is still cool, Obi-wan seems a good Knight, not sure about Master though. Anakin is whiney still and Padme needs a lesson on not being tempting to Jedi. Backless gowns are not what you wear when you're trying to give someone the brushoff. ;) I agree with some people I've read on the 'net, the new movies really need some kind of Rogue type...like Han Solo in the first trilogy. No one in the movies fits this, save maybe Qui-gonn in the first movie. And he was only vaguely roguey...being vaguely rebellious against the Jedi Council. Oh well. I still like it, even with my nitpicking at times.

When your a sales weasel, and you have to send two customers to other companies because

    A. We cannot do what they ask in the time asked, or we don't have the bit installed.

    B. We're too damn honest to lie.

One customer needed a wireless nic by tomorrow, and wanted to know if it would be better to go buy one at CompUSA. The other was one of my repeats, looking for 256 dimms (8 of them) for a machine...we're out of those dimms, and no idea when they'll be back in. So not only do I send him to Kingston memory, but I give him the part #.

New News is Good News Wed Nov 13 12:15:41 CST 2002
Mood: at work Music of the Day: I have a fan.
Well, here I am at work, thought I'd post a recap of the last week or so. Hmm. Well, last weekend I went up to DFW to visit the Ufies and introduce Rhiannon to some people. We left around 9ish friday night, after spending too much time looking for one of the cats who got outside. We start on up, and my car proceded to not want to run well, come back home, swap cars, head back up. Get to Amythest's house around 1am, talk for a bit, crash. Get up the next morning, go to the zoo with another friend of mine. Have a wonderful, if tiring day at the zoo. Saw some swift foxes there, made my day :) Had to pry Rhiannon away from the tigers...next time will bring a crowbar.

After the zoo we headed back to Amythest's to change, and then went to The Grim Squeaker and Sugarfae for my bday party. I got some very nice loot, including a first edition Deities and Demigods by TSR...the one that had the stats of Cthulhu. :) This was from the hosts. I also got a fox calendar from Amythest, some more books from The Grim Squeaker and Sugarfae, and a copy of Spiderman from Nymaz. Stayed up way too late talking, Rhiannon really fit in with everyone. She was a hit :)

The next day we overslept, then hussled booty over to my mother's so Rhiannon could meet my parental unit. Again, she was a hit. What can I say, I'm a lucky SOB. We had lunch/dinner with mom (stuffed shells, yum yum yum) then eventually headed back to Austin.

After that weekend, I've been trying to catch up on sleep, and failing badly. Spent some time rebuilding the Cabal23.net website, plotting a redesign of Rhiannon's page. I'm also migrating all the data drives on discordia to reiserfs. Now that's taking some juggling. 120 gigs of Mp3's doesn't migrate fast. I also designed a new background last night, a small parody of the iMacGirl image that's been around. Now we have the Cabal23.net Girl. I need to setup a file/download section on cabal23.net. I've also purchased 3 new domains, austinufies.org, plushcthulhu.com and shub-inter.net. The first one will be for the ufies community I want to get running here in Austin, the 2nd one will show off the Adventures of Skippy. Not sure what the 3rd one will do, but I couldn't resist it. :) Nothing has been done yet, waiting on a rebuild of the server I'm hosting on.

Hmm, what else. Working an earlier shift at Delli. Makes the redhead happy. Not good for my sleep, but I'll adapt. I did go and get the Star Wars Ep II dvd release yesterday, didn't watch it. Mostly I got it for the Yoda lightsabre duel ;)

I guess that's it...talk to everyone later. *yawn*

Well, I got some sleep last night after my post-enlightenment snafu. I woke up, and designed another SouthPark character, something more like the normal me.

What's scary, this is close to what I look like most of the time. *shudder* Glad I didn't take that job in Colorado. ;)
