New DVD's
|
Sept. 24th, 2001
|
Well, yesterday I went by Suncoast video and picked up a pair of new DVDs.
I got The Dunwich Horror
and Big Trouble in Little China
Special Edition. I've been wanting BTLC on DVD forever, just haven't been
able to afford it. So I got my first paycheck on Friday, and well..what
can I say it called my name. And I just had to get the Dunwich Horror, which
was one of the best adaptations of an HP Lovecraft story.
Big Trouble in Little China has a ton of add ons, including the capper. A
music video of John Carpenter (the director of the movie) playing the
theme song. :) Very cool. John Carpenter always does the best (weirdest)
movies. Now, Dunwich Horror is campy horror at its best. Hey, it's a
Roger Cormanmovie.
Demonic child of an Elder God meets girl. Demonic child of an Elder God falls
for girl. Demonic child of an Elder God straps girl to altar. The dvd box
actually has this quote "Single white warlock seeks beautiful blond babe
to join him at the altar...the sacrifical altar." *grin* Gotta love it.

Work, work, work
|
Sept 19th, 2001
|
|
Well, I'm coming to the end of my first full week on the phones at work. So far, s'okay. Kinda dull, but not
so dull I go insane. I do come home rather pooped, but I think alot of that
is winding down on the train ride home. Been trying to get friends of
mine hired, which will make work even more amusing :) Here's to hope. :)
Here's also to promotions off the tech floor and $75K a year. Well, I can
dream. ;)

Fennec Lives
|
Sept. 14th, 2001
|
|
Well, after swapping out the power supply, I'm proud to announce that Fennec
is back from the grave and providing mp3's. I added a stick of 128 megs
of ram, and I'm going to up the processor to a 533 celeron (currently fennec
has a 366.) Why the power upgrade, well I'm going to set Fennec to also
act as a secondary DNS server and a few other things. And a little extra
power would be nice. :) Next, I need to find another large hard drive so
I can combine some of the drives. Money money money, I need money.

Fennec Down
|
Sept. 13th, 2001
|
|
Well, I woke up to a fairly bad thing this AM. Kitsune (my main workstation)
had a bunch of NFS errors. I mount the drives on the fileserver (Fennec) via
NFS, mostly to listen to mp3s. Well, the fileserver occasionally looses
connection and needs to be jumpstarted, no big deal. Except when I switched
the KVM switch to fennec, no screen. Not good, no humming sound either.
Very not good. After a little tinkering, no dice. No post, no power supply
noises, nada. Which could mean dead power supply. Or dead motherboard.
Either way, bad. :( I think I have a spare powersupply, so I'll try that
tomorrow. If that doesn't work, then I have to get creative. Bleah.
Not been my year for computers.

Terrorists.
|
Sept. 11th, 2001
|
|
Just a short post tonight. I spent most of today in one form of shock or
another over the plane crashes in NYC and Washington DC...mostly over NYC.
I know that area, I remember walking around it as a kid. I can't grasp that
the buildings are gone. Nor can I imagine how many people were killed or
injured. This is horrific. *sigh* Personal, I think the people responsible
for this are cowards. They claim this is war, then strike at civilians.
Not even at civilians near a military instalation, but in the middle of one
of the most populated cities on earth, just to cause terror. I'm not Islamic,
and I don't know if the people are responsible for it are Islamic, but if
they are...I'm fairly sure Allah will be pissed over this one. *sigh* My
faith in humanity is really really gone now. :(

Hosting Page
|
Sept. 10th, 2001
|
|
Well, since Arwen and the LinuxWench have mooved on to bigger and better
things, or webservers at least, I've taken down the hosted sites page. I still
host a few websites, but not as many as a year ago. How things change.

Musketeer
|
Sept 9th, 2001
|
|
Well, on Friday I saw Musketeer. Think bucking swashes with a nice marital
arts mix. It's supposedly based on Dumas's novel, but I'm thinking they
took the cast of characters from the book, and dropped the rest. Now with
these flaws...it's still fun. Not bad acting, very good fight scenes,
a few good jokes. The fights were classic Hong Kong action, which seemed
to work. The climatic scene, a swordfight on ladders...is stole whole
cloth from Once Upon a Time in China. But it's still cool. Go see it :)

Changes, they are a coming :)
|
Sept 9th, 2001
|
Ok, I've got a few changes to announce. 1, as you may have guessed from
the previous news posts, I have a shell script for posting to my
website. It's not unique, other people have written them, or have
neater ways to do it via php or perl. But this works for me, and I wrote
it from scratch. I may post the code later tonight, when I'm more awake.
Also, I've started to migrate my office out to the living room of Chez
Vulpine. Mostly so I can use this big living room, and watch TV. TV is
good. Now to finish cleaning house so I can migrate everything else in here.
So far, all I've moved is Kitsune and Foxgate. Ethernet connects the new
office space to the server rack. Eventually I'll have it moved out here.
I need to decorate more first ;)

| The Fox Has Landed | Sept 5th 2001 |
Well, I survived my whirlwind tour of the Southeast. :) Dragoncon was alot
of fun. I got to meet alot of people from the Tamson House email list, saw
some bizarre things at the 'con, drooled over things I can't afford. Hmm,
lets see how it went.
Ok, flew out on AirTran Airlines on
Thursday. Got to Atlanta fairly early, then took MARTA (Atlanta public
transit) to near where my friends live. There 'song picked me up and
took me back to her place. Settled in, met everyone as they staggered in,
watched a weird scifi movie called 'The Specials'. Sorta like Mystery Men,
with a better plot and more weirdness. Rather enjoyable. Settled in and
slept. (Mental note: never sleep on a loveseat if you have a choice, I'm
short but it was still cramped. Oh well, beat the floor.) Friday was the
start of con. Registered, and proceded to wander around. Dear gods was
it a crowded place. Lots of scifi freaks, and people in costume, like this
Lovely. The
hotel it was in was bizarre, it looked like it was organic instead of built.
Hard to describe, but think HR Giger. Hmm, highlights of the con...I got
to see Harlan Ellison and Peter David paroding Iron Chef. I thought I was
going to blow a gasket...it was funny as hell. Also got to listen to
Peter David and Laurel K. Hamilton do readings. Peter was so funny I thought
I was going to pass out. Laurel was just fun to listen to, nice voice.
Hmm, what else...saw two lectures done by the Georgia State Medical Examiner,
in which one person fainted. What can I say, I'm a bit of a gorehound ;)
All in all the con was fun, minus some horrid planning flaws...like trying to
crowd too many people into too small of a space (I hate crowds). But all
in all I had a great time. Hmm, I wonder if I can go again next year.
For the curious, check out the Pics.

| Internet America | September 5th 2001 |
|
Started my first day at Internet America today. Slow day, training on the
databases they use to store customer info. Some stuff on how things are
layed out. Slow day really. The train is a good idea, easier than driving...
if kinda pricy from here in arlington. Oh well. It's a job.
