Well, got to work 20 min early...since Austin traffic is so wacky, I erred
on the side of caution. Waited around, got my snazzy temp temp badge. I
get my perm temp badge on Wednesday. Get into class...yep, the only
longhair here. No shock. Mental note, tomorrow wearing slightly more
casual clothes. Do the normal intros, hi I'm Chris, I'm a SysAdmin who's
sick of working goofy level one tech jobs to afford food. Do some group
exercises, show off my tech knowledge by developing a school network with
an 800k budget...100 classrooms, 200 desktops, 100 laptops later...I have
a nice school setup, or one hell of a LAN party ;)
Then on to 'Don't get us in trouble with the FTC' lesson, then the 'how to
use self paced training' lesson. Then lunch, then hardware
overview...what is Firewire, how fast is a CPU, etc. Twiddle my thumbs,
get told to work ahead...finish our timesheet tutorial. Finish up with
some info on the Inspiron. ;) So far it's a cakewalk, other than having
to think inside the box sometimes. ;)
*yawn*
is it nap time yet ?
Later that day.
And to finish the day, got the HR lecture about what is and isn't appropriate.
Good news: wearing blue jeans is offically ok. Dockers go back in the closet.
Bad news: Running that pr0n server from work may be difficult. ;)
Amusing news: Dell security admins offically have no sense of humor that
they are aware of. (This is a quote from a trainer, so any Dell security
people who read this...don't kill me.)
Nothing really unique. Do your job, dress comfy but not like a loon. No
inappropriate touching or comments. Don't hack the Pentagon from work.
common sense stuff. All already expected and planned.
Then went to see where we'll be listening in on calls tomorrow. Looks like
any other call center. I think me and the stuffed cthulhi will fit in ok.
Then they let us go home early...which is a good thing. :) Well, I could
use more hours...but I have this feeling I'll make up with OT to spare in
the next 2 weeks. It's usually a 3 week class, that's being compressed...so
this should be intresting. :)

Well, I'm having another bad night. Not going into details, no matter what
some people think, I don't expose my life to the whole world. Just selected
bits of my life...mostly the fun and good stuff. But I got a reminder that
life can truely blow goats, especially when the past still affects how you
think and act and feel. Which is something I have done for years. Hell, I
still let something that happened in Grade school affect me. I need to
stop letting my past control my life. Learn from my past yes, control me no.
Damn saturn returns...*thud* *thud*
On the plus side, I start work tomorrow at Dell. Thank $DEITY (who more and
more in my life is Eris Disordia). I'm need money, I need a challenge, I need cubicles ?
*bork bork* Oh well. The job will help me work on focusing, as well give
me a measure for weirdness :) What can I say, I'll be working in sales.

Well, I finished
the Illuminatus Trilogy tonight. I don't know if I'm glad to be finished, or disappointed.
It made much more sense this time, which scares me a little. Makes me also
want to tear into
Schrodinger's Cat as well. Another mindfsck book. Hell, all of
Mr Wilson's books are pretty FUBAR. So, maybe tomorrow (today) I'll start
something as weird. Who knows.
On to other news, in T-minus 19 days and counting, I reach my first score
and ten, leaving two score to go, biblically speaking. Actually I'm
shooting for alot longer. I belive a man should live forever, or die trying.
;) Seriously, from what I've seen, people don't get their ass in gear til
30. Jesus for example. ;) Captain Kirk didn't get command of the Enterprise
til he was 31. And I think I couldn't become a Rabbi til I was at least 30,
but I'm not sure. William the Conqueror invaded England at 39, I have 9
years to conqueror a country. Nikola Tesla hadn't invented any of his
really really cool things. Nicolo Paganini didn't write is 24 caprices til
he was 38. HP Lovecraft didn't write The Call of Cthulhu til he was 36. So I'm still good to go. Now to figure out wtf I'm going to do
with my life... That I have no clue...but lets have some fun finding out.

I feel like a sysadmin again. Now to get some files moved over and setup,
then ponder a webbased calendar for the house. Plus testing out things

Hey all. Well, slavegirl (aka the fileserver) got a medium update today.
The case that she's in is missing the top and side panels from the move, no
idea where they are. And since I have this cute little kitten (yes, I'm
talking about you Pixel) that loves to bat at wires, it could be dangerous.
I've already found him inside the server batting at cables *ACK !!!!*
So today I swapped cases for one with a bigger power supply and a closing
case. Swap went mostly ok...til I moved the case and jiggled a PCI card.
Crashed the server. So I'm waiting for the drives to finish checking
themselves. *crosses fingers* And since the case I was planning to use
for a future mp3 server is in the case state...I'm a touch annoyed. Oh well,
will go hunt a new server case for an mp3 server next month or so. Once
we have broadband, and I have the spare cash. :) While I was at it, I also
added a CDRom so I can update the server to do webhosting and DNS as well.
With all the changes, the server got a rename. So say hello to
discordia.cabal23.net. :)

Moshe Bar's article in Byte magazine. He touts the praises of Ibooks and Mac OSX. Now I've
played with OSX a little on SugarFae

after my headaches with trying to get linux running on Voyeur, my laptop.
I finally gave up, it was just too unusable for things like multimedia, or
modem, or using it anywhere outside of my home network. So I wonder...should
I get an Ibook next. I may, but it will be a long while before I can buy
one. So, we'll see. But read the article, Moshe is a really good person

Well, I'm bored, so I decided to give you all a desc. of the kitty roommates.
Some you'll be familiar with, some are new.
Diamond: Our bigass maine coon cross. He's a good cat normally, even
though he's gotten rather aggressive since we moved to Pflugerville.
Trinity: She was my queen domme-kitty, but she's settled down alot
since we moved. She's still one of the prettiest kitties I know.
Pixel: The kitten who walks behind monitors. And he's a healthy kitten
now. :)
Hissy: Pixel's mom. Very pretty kitty, and VERY shy. Not what you'd
call a social cat.
Thunder: Our Siamese gargoyle. He loved to perch on the highest spot
in the house. He's on par with Diamond in the size dept. Nice cat.
Shadow: Aka "Mr Klutz". Pixel's dad. A very friendly cat, even if he
falls whenever he attempts to climb. Black as midnight, and loves to play
with Pixel.
Thumblina: Another black kitty, she isn't as playful as Shadow. A little
plump, but a loving kitty. She loves her mama (Rhiannon).
So that's cats in the house. Lots of kitties, lots of meowing. It's kinda
nice. Eventually I'll have pics up of all of them. But I need a digital
camera first. ;)

but she understood, and listened very well. What can I say, I'm a damn

Happy. Aka a standard 44k connection, with as far as I can tell, only one
below 40k connection since I started, and that was last night at 0045. Not
bad for Pflugerville Phone Lines. Plus a hats off to Illuminati Online for providing a damn good dialup. Sure beats the
whining I heard at IA. ;) I've also spend a good chunk of this evening
tinkering with my desktop. First I change my theme, then I change my
desktop, thanks to Jedidiah.
He sent me a very nice desktop pic of the model
Laetitia Casta. Quite yummy.
And to take advantage of it...I tinted a few of my desktop windows, then
changed my gtk theme to one of
Jedidiah's. Now I'm looking for new, more colorful
XMMS and gKrellm skins. Anything
to help my mood. Plus, during this long ass bout of insomnia I tinkering
with my BitchX settings. Nothing
major, mostly getting ideas for future changes....as soon as I puzzle out
the borky rc code ;)
Well, it's now alot later than when I started...Time for bed.

Well, as you can guess by the subject and mood...I'm a touch moody. Haven't

a new city, and general flern has not helped. It feels like I haven't
done anything for a month. And it doesn't help that I'm driving
Rhiannon nuts worrying about me. *sigh*
I can't wait to start work, maybe then I'll be back to normal.
On the slightly more positive side, I got kallisti (my workstation) acting
as a dialup router for Rhiannon's
windoze box. Not hard under SuSE 8.0, but
it didn't start working til alot later...weird. I also updated my desktop
a little. Not alot, just changed Enlightenment themes from minEquE to
Eazel-blueE-port. No, I'm not posting a screenshot today, takes too
damn long ;) I may post one later.

Well, it's been a busy (sorta) weekend. Specifically we had cat issues.
My dear Pixel, aka that kitten, decided to get really sick. Lots of
vomiting and generally a miserable kitty. He did so much vomiting, that
we ended up taking him to the emergency vet clinic about 15 min after
my last journal post. They checked him out, yep he was suffering from
dehydration, but no obvious causes. SO they hydrated the hell out of him,
gave me drugs, took lots of money that I don't really have to spare, and
sent us home. Pixel was soso the next day (saturday) but today he's been
mostly his usual self. A bit calmer and cuddlier, which is good. He
scared me...and I'm rather glad he's better.
Other than that, not much else. Lazy day today. Started re-reading
the Illuminatus Trilogy
by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea
again...this time with the plan to finish it sooner than the 3-4 months it took
me last time. It's a damn hard book, that leaps from character perspective
and timeframe ALOT. But it's fun, and I'm getting alot more of the jokes
and conspiricy stuff in it this time :)
Other than that, not much else...getting ready to go back to work again.
Hoping this goes well, I could use a break jobwise. Needing to use
this last week of boredom to finish unpacking and cleaning and organizing.
Btw, the two other roommates of me and Rhiannon moved out, which is a bit of a relief to be honest. I didn't know them
well, and now I can with adapting to not living alone a little easier ;)
All in all though, I'm pretty darn happy. :)
I haven't posted any cool links for a while, so here's a few...
The
Elder God Dance: Woohoo :) It's back.
Cthuugle: the HP Lovecraft
search engine.
Rose McGowan:
Another lovely discovered by watching too much TV...she looked quite nice on
the season premere of Charmed
tonight. Yes, Rhiannon is getting me
hooked on primetime...it's kinda fun ;)

A new (sorta) kitty
|
Tue Sep 17 23:59:06 CDT 2002
|
Well, today was a rather amusing day for us at Chez Snowfox. Me and
Rhiannon were talking about what to do with the Kitten. We'd pretty much
given up hope that we'd find someone to take him off our hands. Rhiannon
pointed out that he seemed rather fond of my desk, my computers (I've
now pried him out of my file server twice now), and me in general. So
we're keeping him, Rhiannon now offically only has four cats, I now have 3,
and the Kitten has gotten named, at least by me (if
Rhiannon can call him anything but Kitten, I'll be shocked.)
As a Heinlein and
Spider fan, a orange kitty lends itself to one name.
Pixel (at least as I remember, Pixel in the books was orange). But
unlike his predecessors, the Cat who Walks though Walls and the Cat who
Walks though Windshields, this Pixel is the Cat who Walks though
Computer Monitors. He has a weird habit of hiding behind my two
monitors, and reaching out to tap me on the hand from behind them. It
looks vaguely silly to me. :)
So say hi to Pixel, the latest of the Pflugerville Pfeline Pfederation
Vulpine & Pixel, who says *blert*

Ok boys and girls, Vulpine's lesson of the day. When your removing all
the files from dir /home/vulpine/temp/whatever the syntax for the command is
NOT!!! 'rm -rf * ~/temp/whatever/' *whimper* I really only lost
about 3 gigs of stuff, of course, it was the 3 gigs that was not backed up.
*whimper* Mostly pics and some multimedia files. Nothing too irreplaceable,
just a PITA to fix. So, what do I do...besides cry...write more backup
scripts. *sigh* I will not let this get me down. Well, time to scour the
stashed disks and drives and cds, see what I can recover. *crosses toes*

Job Goodness and Another Austin Report.
|
Wed Sep 11 15:53:20 CDT 2002
|
Well, after a few weeks of hunting, while moving, unpacking, and settling,
I've found a job. It's not a techie job, I'll be doing sales for
Dell. Back to square one for me...for those
who don't know, I started working in tech by being a salesweasel for
Onramp Technologies. I don't think this will be my permenent career, but
it pays the bills, and makes a nice break from level one tech support. At
least I hope so. ;)
Well, after getting hired, I had to go into Austin proper for a pee-test.
No sweat. From there, I go downtown to return a movie to what is probably
one of the coolest video stores I've ever been in. It's a place called
Vulcan Video. Now these guys are
good, they have a huge collection of bad B movies, foreign films, horror
flicks, anime, etc... Hell, they have Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town. ;)
(IMDB entry when I have internet access). Well, this is down near the
UT campus, where a mathmatician specializing in non-Eucledian geometry
laid out the street plan. Hell, the street Vulcan is on looks like
upside-down '?' or the Blue Oyster Cult symbol ;) So, on my attempt to
get back on the highway, I got utterly turned around, and finally ended up
on Lamar, aka the road that goes on and on and on... Eventually I hit
something I knew, then back to the highway, then home. All I know is
Austin does twisted things to my direction sense. I don't know if UT
is working on reality-bending hyper particle physics, if the goddess
Eris Discordia is living down on
Guadalupe street (next to the
Scientologists, or that dread C'thulhu is living under Lake Travis...this place is looney. I like
it. :)

Austin Update
|
Sun Sep 1 23:10:23 CDT 2002
|
Well, I said I'd make an update. Here it is. I left for Austin last
Sunday, with cats and ferrets in tow. The cats (Diamond and Trinity)
were very upset with the idea of driving, while the ferrets (Winter and
Shadow) were mellow and curious about the whole thing. Make good time
to Pflugerville, unload the critters and the load of stuff I brought.
The ferrets were still mellow, but the cats were uber-freaked by the
other cats (Rhiannon has 5 of her
own), humans, and the other roomies' dog. Diamond hid under a table in
the living room, and Trinity stayed in the cat carrier for hours, til
we put her in the bathroom alone. Eventually, after some unpacking,
and some general twitching, we went to bed.
The next day was errand day, running around getting new keys made, helping
new roomie #2 get her license. Not much done, mostly getting ready for
Tuesday aka Moving day. Tuesday rolls around, I go to the
U Haul place, pick up my nice huge
truck. Fill out the 30' of paperwork, and off I go to Arlington. Long
slow drive, but not too bad...found good radio stations on the way. Get
to Arlington, call Amythest, who's
offered to help...along with one of her students. She gets there in a
while, helps me finish packing. Anon (her student) shows up a few
hours later, and we load the truck. We get done about 10:30 or so, then
we drive to Amythest's place, to drop off some of the stuff she snagged.
Get back on the road around 11:30. Call Rhiannon to say I'm going to be
late, and ack...phone isn't working. Haul major buttock down to Austin,
and just on the outskirts of Pflugerville my truck starts acting up, hitching
and running funny. I get into our neighborhood, and the truck dies about
half a block from the house. *grumble* It's acting like it ran out of
gas...err diesel.
Walk down to the house, come on in,
procede to get a loud "Where were you !!!!????!!!!" from Rhiannon. *grin*
What can I say, she worries. Tell her the story, go to bed...eventually
get some sleep.
The next day, I call U Haul's support line about the dead truck. After a
telling the same story over and over again to different techs, they send a
local mechanic over to bring a jerry can for the truck. He comes over,
fills it up some. Try to go, no movement. Mechanic checks the trans
mission and fills it up with fluid. The same. He thinks the transmission
is hosed. He finally jury-rigs it up and inches it down to the Chez Snow
Fox. We unload the truck, my tons of books and computers cause a few
comments. Seems my geekdom is new and odd to people ;) Get dinner from the
world's slowest Kentucky Fried Chicken. Pass out early.
Now it's Thursday, call U Haul again to get them to tow the truck away.
Start the fun of unpacking, get most of the books put up in a few hours.
Give Rhiannon a small heartattack when she gets home. All the vanished
boxes. ;) Friday is a fairly lazy day, have lunch with some friends
(one local, one from out of town). Go to dinner with the out of town
friend. Come home, pass out. ;) (see a pattern here ?) Saturday,
we work on Rhiannon's costume for a party next week, come home...I
work on computers, getting them all setup. Which is pretty much the
same thing I did today.
On the computer front, I've whittled down my about of stuff for now. Since
I'm on a dialup connection for now, I'm pretty much limiting myself to my
main linux box (kallisti), my fileserver (slavegirl) and my laptop (voyeur),
along with Rhiannon's windows box (kajira). So only four computers. Now
when we get DSL, I'll start running a DNS server again, as well as eventually
creating a new Mp3 server (all the mp3s and multimedia and files are on
slavegirl. 148 gig of space total). I'm missing alot of little things,
like power supplies and cables...but I hope to find them in the next day
or two.
So, until I get a modem for kallisti, I'm limited to using kajira for email
access via Squirrelmail (a goofy webapp client on my server host). I miss
Pine tons. But other than
the little problems, I'm doing good. :) Happy happy fox. I'll write
more as things come up. :)
